Thank You 2009

31st December 2009 ... wow ... cepatnya masa berjalan. It has been a very hectic year for me tahun ini. Alhamdulillah, syukur kepada Tuhan for giving me strength to finish my journey dengan jayanya. I came back to Malaysia for good and started a new life in Penang some months ago. With all the ups and downs, life has been truly 'colorful' for me so far. May the new year bring good health, peace and happiness to all of us, no matter where we are. Amin.
Signing off ...

Kadang-kadang

Kadang-kadang ada perkara yang hanya kita sahaja yang patut tahu.
Dan kadang-kadang, hanya masa sahaja yang menjadi faktor penentu.

Malam Persada Kencana

I attended a dinner last Friday - Malam Persada Kencana. I was in emerald green that nite huahahahahahaha, bergaya bagai nak rak gitu, well ... tak le over ok, lol. Anyway, a dear colleague drove us to the Gurney Resort Hotel that night. It was raining heavily and the traffic jam was just crazy - via Greenlane, as well as Jelutong. When we finally arrived at the ballroom, the tables were filled up very quickly. Luckily, we managed to secure one, that is with colleagues from the same school (except for George) ... Hehehehe, sorry yek George ;).

I think the dinner went well - by that I mean, the performances and cultural dances were good. We had zapin, gamelan and a contemporary one too. It was indeed a very colourful night, especially for the recipients of the various awards. I liked the ambience, it's been a long time since I last attended a formal dinner in the Malaysian setting. And I also enjoyed the company of my colleagues. They were just a great bunch of people. However, the food was not impressive and the service could've been better.

That night too, I think I was being rather cold towards someone at the table. I didn't mean/want to be rude to him. I just can't afford another wave of gossips going around, can I?

Would It Be The Same?

I had lunch at Subway this afternoon with my comrades. We later had coffee and cinnamon rolls at Starbucks @ E-Gate. Prior to that, I told them what really happened.
Would it ever be the same again?
I don't know.

Macam-macam Ragam

I wanted to put up a post last 28th, but I was so so not in the mood. I couldn't really sum up what happened that day for I had a fair share of bad news and good news. The day was supposedly to start in a good way as it was my friend's birthday. Nad and I bought something special for her (we hope so hahahahaha). But then, one stupid car run into my car -- and suffice to say, I really lost my temper that day. And the driver was also trying to be funny to me, well ... nak gelak pon ada gak. Yang penting, I am not hurt.
Anyway, that noon, I received the much awaited news. It really made my day... despite the unfortunate incident in the morning. Alhamdullillah. But I don't know why, I was really not in the mood to share the good news. I said so because someone pointed out to me that my responses to his "discourse" were rather sarcastic. Hehehehe ... it must have been obvious - he said it was apparent in my body language. And then he went on elaborating things pertaining to body language. *sigh*
But I think I was feeling much better that night. Went to Gurney (btw guess what - I met the birthday gal with Mr. SV at Living Quarters, hahahahaha - that was surely a big surprise to all of us) and had dinner at McD. On the way back, stopped by at Khaleel for a teh tarik session. Hehehehe. By the time sampai rumah, dah dekat midnite, pas tu terus zzzzzzzzzz.
To Puga-a-a ... Happy Birthday and may all your dreams come true.

Bt. Gedong - Campbell St. - Kayu Nasi Kandar

Nad and I had a really great feast for lunch yesterday at PugaA's place. The food was so good -the lunch, the cookies, the maruku and the pudding. And the good company. Esther was there with her sister as well. From Bukit Gedong, we headed to a kopitiam near Sunshine. Another session of sembang2 with Nad. She was away at the national archive for a few days last week. Well, there was quite a bit of updates that we were talking about.
Later, I went out again to Campbell Street with my mom and dad. We had mamak food at Hameediyah. We also took a walk at Chowrastra Market. I could see that my mom was walking down the memory lane when she explained to us about the shops and places that she used to visit. She also told me that she has never dreamt that one day she'd come back to Penang, that is after having stayed here some 40 years ago. Hmmmm ... you just don't know what life has in store for you.
It is my friend's birthday today and he asked me out to lunch. He specifically requested to have something fatty, Lol. So, we had nasi kandar at Kayu. I think he had a good go at the briyani hahahahahaha. Anyway, because today is his special day, I hope he will always be healthy and happy & may he also find what he's been looking for. Amin.

Wajah Rahsia Hati

I was at a workshop this morning. And I saw a face that was so familiar some time ago. Masih muka yang sama, masih style yang sama - from hair to toe. Sape sangka, after all these years.
Berkat hari Jumaat agaknya.
I wonder if ...

Banana Speaks ...

Another rendezvous in penang for luncheon. This time somewhere near Sunshine. Wanted to go to Restaurant Nazir - but it was full house. So Nad and I headed to another makan place - Banana Cafe - I think - at a T junction near a masjid and Seri Malaysia. The food is sooooo yummy, plenty to choose from and the price is reasonable. That is if I were to compare it with Anjung Budi la kan. Must take Madam P there one of these days ;)

Woodlands Encounter

I had lunch in town 2 days ago at a vegetarian restaurant - Woodlands - right in the heart of little India. The food was gooood and the company was marvellous (well, the goss helped to spice up things, muahahahahaha). Cheers to the G-girls (you know who you are), we should do this more often.

Lebaran Ku

Raya tahun ini memang meriah. Well, aside from the unwelcome conversations with some cousins of mine la kan. Otherwise, it was one of the best balik kampung trips I have ever had. I was home. This time around, I was at ease knowing that I deserve some time to really celebrate not only the Eid Mubarak but also whatever that I have accomplished this year. And I thank God for granting me all the patience and strength in all that I've done. I hope the Syawal this year has been memorable for you and family too.

I am Home

Dengar lagu raya kat Msia tak sama macam dengar lagu raya kat Perth. Berpuasa tu lagi la lainkan. Apa pun, I'm glad to be home this year. I have missed all these very much when I was away.

No Whinging Please!

Most of the times I grumble without the presence of others and yes, I do complain to other people too. But at least I don't make it a habit. Grow up my friend! You talked highly of your achievements, you asked to be given the opportunity, you happily made your decision ... so now walk the talk la. It's not that you have any good reasons not to do it. The truth is I have had enough of your whinges of late. Please go and whinge somewhere else. I need to say this because at present, I cannot afford such negative vibes. TQVM.

Home

I know no other home but T.Intan. I was born in T. Anson (then), and grew up in that small town. I was a Convent School student through and through, and even attended my Lower Six in St. Anthony for several weeks. I left T.Intan after that to pursue my studies and have yet to come back to stay permanently. I will, one day. After all home is where the heart belongs ...
I was feeling nostalgic when I first saw the pic below. Many years ago, the town market used to be just opposite the jam tinggi, that's what we call it - the clock tower. My Opah always took me on the bicycle to go to the market, especially during the hari minggu. A trip to the market, and later to the pasar minggu & pasar tani. You know, I really looked forward to my pegi-pekan trips although I had to sit at the back of the bicycle. When I was in secondary school, she would allow me to cycle my own bike, that is, of course with her cycling in front of me!
Hmmmmm, the market. There were four entrance points to the market; two facing the jam tinggi, and another 2 facing the Ayam Dinding and the Kedai Wali. They had the stalls for the sayo2 kampung, which were among the first stalls that we would stop by. And then, the meat sections, and the fish. Near the other exits were the barang2 runcit, other vege stalls, the florists and the kedai buah. At the other entrance point from the jam tinggi, I still remember, my Opah would stop to buy ikan rebus from this one Chinese man. He was Chinese, but he spoke perfect Perak Malay - exactly, probably more prominent, than those from Kg. Gajah would. And of course, the ulam2, the tempoyak, even the pink round hard bedak (bedak batu sila, I think). And the ikan rebus man also sold buah nangka. At that age, getting some buah nangka from Opah was like my special treat to coming with her to the market. I love fresh buah nangka so much even until today. Somewhere close to the nearby entrance point was also the place for chicken slaughtering. My Tok, sometimes, was asked to sembelih some ayams. They called him Hj. Lope Cerut.
Next to the jam tinggi, there was also a row of small shops. I can only recall two of the shops - at the very end there was a record shop - WIRA Enterprise, and there was also a Chinese kedai ubat (that's where my Tok always got the medicine for us). Next to these shops was the ever famous kedai kopi - it was better known as Kedai Kopi Pak Ya. That's where my Tok and a lot of other T.Intanians used to 'lepak' for their morning kopi. Hehehehehehe. And you could get the best nasi lemak in town there. Trust me, they were definitely the best nasi lemak (bungkus in daun ok) in town, I think the nasi lemaks were made by Pakcik Baharom & Makcik Misah of Kebun Limau (that is if I'm not mistaken). Sometimes, we used to order from them for nasi lemaks to be sent to the surau if there were any kenduris or tahlils. The nasi lemak bungkus was quite big, and hot, but very very delicious! And I think there was also one bicycle repair shop along the same row of shops. That's where we'd park our bicyle before doing the marketing.
Those are the only shops that I can remember. The market street was definitely the busiest street in the small town of T.Intan. I would never forget my first time driving near the market. My driving instructor asked me to drive in the middle of the town and gosh - the engine became tersemput2 and stopped exactly at the crossroad junction, just steps away from the busy market. There were many, many motorists criss-crossing in front of me, and in T. Intan, those on bicycles and motorcycles were (and still are) the kings and the queens of the roads!. Can you imagine the the honkings that I got? Suffice to say, it was an embarassing morning for me. To make things worst, I was spotted by one of my neighbours of the incident, which predictably, was reported to my Opah. Aiya! So malu, I tell you, with the scoldings that I got from my driving instructor, it was enough to say that I only got back to driving in the town just days before my driving test. Hehehehe. Gabrak seh.
Those were the days. The town has changed a lot since then. The market was re-located to the former site of the hospital. Next to the sungai actually. The market now boasts more stalls and better layout. You can get almost everything there, especially dried and fresh seafood - with the udang galah, the ikan keli, you name it, they have it. The old market site has now been developed into buildings of shopping annex. I have yet to explore the place. The surrounding area near the jam tinggi has also been kept clear and made more presentable - undeniably the clock tower has always been the signature and the pride of the town. Probably someone ought to write or capture the development of historical T.Intan during its yesteryears. That'd be something worth reminiscencing.
